●絶望的な事態[情勢] a desperate state of affairs; a hopeless situation.

●もはやかれらの生存は絶望的だ. There can no longer be any hopes that they have survived. | All hope for their survival [that they may have survived] has now faded.

・回復はもう絶望的だ. There is no longer any chance that he will recover. | We must give up hopes for his recovery.

・必ずしも絶望的でない. There is still some hope.

・「試験はどうだ」「いや絶望的です」 “How did the exam go?”―“Not a hope [chance].”

・前途はまったく絶望的だ. There's not a shred [even a gleam] of hope ahead. | The future is utterly bleak [without hope].
